for their Help in Establishing
Schools for the Poor
By
Sachi G. Dastidar
For over two decades Probini Foundation, now ISPaD: The Indian Subcontinent Partition Documentation Project, has been helping Durgapur City, West Bengal’s Swami Vivekahanda Vani Prachar Samiti. Mr. Jayanta Biswas was the leader in organizing an exceptional celebration of success of helping the poor. The organized a big 2-hour event for us the visitors, acknowledging their success of only seven students when we came to help two decades ago to over 1,600 poor students and hiring of over 100 teachers for schools run by them. All the schools and a large number of students participated in the program, from welcome marches, to dances, to singing, to recitation, to question-and-answer and lot more. This was a big surprise for Shefali and me. A large number of students belonged to poor tribal communities.
Some of the individuals who welcomed the guests include Ms. Jharna Das, Mr. Sunil Ray, Mr. Sujoy Mondol, Mr. Sunil roy, Mr. Dilip Roy, and many more. Mr. Nirmal Mondol, head of the non-profit, worked behind the scene.
The visit didn’t end without a 15-course lunch with numerous typical Bengali-style fish dishes. Guests were invited to offer prayer to Ramakrishna shrine. Now the center not only runs schools, but also health centers and hospitals, shelters and lot more.
