Madaripur Sevasram Student Dorms, Bangladesh:

Marching Forward 2022

By

Sachi G. Dastidar

It was wonderful to see the progress of Madaripur Sevasram who has been moving forward in educating the poor and the orphaned. All credit goes to the monk’s hard work and dedication for uplifting the oppressed. Way back in 1990s when the ashram approached us, the property was mostly destroyed by anti-indigenous thugs during Islamic Republic of Pakistan and its allies destruction of student dorm, living space, shrine and other buildings in 1971. In addition, someone had built an illegal two-story building on its property. Our request and that of the monk’s local administration removed the two-story home from its property. The original dorm (hostel) was built by Swami Pranavananda, founder of Bharat Sevasram Sangha, and founder of schools and hostels to educate the poor. Swamiji was a native of the same Madaripur district of Bangladesh. Swami Pranavananda was also an active participant of India’s Independence movement, thus imprisoned many times by the British Colonial oppressors.

With Probini/ISPaD’s help one hostel was built in early 2000, and then recently completed a multistory hostel within its territory. Currently, the ashram is building a new shrine, guest rooms, meeting places, and lot more.

The monk has also taken a lead in establishing Nihar Kana Ghosh Scholarship at the local Donovan Girls’ High School as Ms. Nihar Kana Ghosh stood first in school exam in all of East Bengal, now Bangladesh, in 1919. Ms. Nafisa Bashar Popy, the deputy head mistress, discussed with the monk and this writer to set up the scholarship. There was a group to teachers who joined the discussion.
