2022 Noakhali Gandhi Ashram, Bangladesh: A New Era

2022 Noakhali Gandhi Ashram, Bangladesh:

A New Era

It was wonderful to see the Noakhali Gandhi Ashram has developed further, especially after the demise of Ms. Jharna Dhara Chowdhry who initiated a bridge with Probini Foundation of New York. Probini helps with scholarships for many poor students. In 2022 Probini has merged with Indian Subcontinent Partition Documentation Project (ISPaD). In early September 2022 Probni and ISPaD met at Gandhi Ashram, and met with the new administration headed by Mr. Raha Naba Kumar, and assisted by Ms. Tandra Barua. Gandhi ashram not only arranged for a wonderful reception but also arranged for a typical Bengali lunch with fish items. One of their workers was a disabled woman who was educated by the ashram, and whose marriage was arranged by the ashram itself.

A new museum looks nice with lots of funding coming from Government of India. It also helped Gandhi Ashram build a new school building complex. Today, it is a great place to visit during a trip to Bangladesh. Jayag village is accessible by public transit from Dhaka and Chittagong, two largest metropolitan areas of the nation, as well as by private car. There are places to eat and sleep. For me, seeing the Jayag Lake without illegal occupation was nice as it reminded me of my campaign to remove the illegal occupants. Gandhiji came to Noakhali District in 1946 to stop a Hindu genocide by Islamists of Muslim League Party of undivided India, who were trying to prove to Colonial British masters that Muslims and Non-Muslims are of two different “races.”

May Gandhi Ashram prosper further! Let us not forget history.
