Lays Foundation with Bhumi Puja (Offering Prayer to the Land)
For School for Extremely Poor Sabar Santhal Tribal and Poor Non-Tribal Communities in
The Sundarbans Area
By
Sachi G. Dastidar
Our Association for Remedy (OAR) has been planning for some time to lay the foundation for a school for the extremely poor communities, especially of the Sabar Santhali communities who still have been engaged in catching crabs as their only means for survival. In the past there have been heavy casualties of Sabars by Sundarbans tigers and crocodiles. Many kids got engaged in crab harvesting from early age. Now, OAR is trying to change that by recruiting kids for schooling and building a new school. OAR wanted to establish the foundation of the new school by ISPaD officials, and presence of Sachi and Shefali G. Dastidar from New York energized them to find an auspicious time to lay the foundation of the school. The journey into that coastal river and forest area itself was a wonderful experience.
The group left Kolkata early in the morning, by road, then continued their journey by boat, and finally by electric scooter transport. The trip included a visit to a school run by OAR, discussion with parents and teachers. The visit to Sundarbans ended with delicious local lunch of several fish items. The tour was led by Mr. Bikash Biswas.
