It is not every day that one
attends a 50th anniversary of a couple’s marriage. Thus when I was
invited to attend Anita and Saibal Guha’s 50th anniversary in
Kolkata (Calcutta) on December 29, 2016 I immediately looked for a ticket to
Kolkata that brought me to the city a day before. Their son Dhruba called from
India to give us the good news. They arranged for the reception to be held in
Calcutta’s iconic colonial-era five-star Grand Hotel located in the city’s
commercial hub called Esplanade on Chowranghee Road.
The event started at 7 PM
in the evening with a program moderated by Dhruba’s wife Bibha. Songs, dances,
skits and short story-telling comprised of cultural acts. Dhruba and his family
living in Gurgaon near Delhi in northern India performed Bengali songs, duets
and dance. Dhruba’s younger brother, Anita & Saibal’s son Raja, his wife Bidisha
and children who live in London, England sang songs, played guitar and danced
with Bengali songs. There were many other friends and family members who either
performed or reminisced about their long association with Guhas.
The cultural program was
followed by a fancy Bengali dinner followed by Bengali sweets, then Bengal tea,
and cake cutting.
Here are a few pictures
from that event:
