Anti-Hindu Pogrom in Bangladesh, Again: Rongpur, North Bangladesh

Anti-Hindu Pogrom in Bangladesh, Again: Rongpur, North Bangladesh; November 2017

Sachi G. Dastidar

As in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria District in the east where an anti-Hindu pogrom took place in 2016 for "Insulting Islam" in Facebook by people who hardly know Facebook. Earlier an anti-Buddhist pogrom took place in 2012 in Chittagong for the same reason. Apparently, this time it was the turn again of poor, oppressed Hindus of Rongpur in north Bangladesh to be tortured and torched while world's caring "human rights" and "civil" society look the other way.

Sadly these are happening in the so-called pro-secular Administration of Awami League Party headed by a female Prime Minister, as was reminded by Professor Dastidar at a recent meeting.

This time the Administration was swift to arrest a hapless illiterate Hindu, Mr. Titu Roy, whose two uninitiated minor daughters were kidnapped and converted to Islam earlier. Yet no one was arrested -- as is the case of Hindu kidnappings, temple and deity desecration, destruction and damage, confiscation of Hindu ancestral home and land without notice and compensation, destruction of cremation grounds and more. No one is ever arrested for derogatory remarks on Hindus, Hinduism, Buddhism or Christianity during daily religious preaching or for posting such items on social media.

Here are some news items from English and Bengali media:

Illiterate Titu Roy’s sketchy Facebook account
Hindu villagers are left with nothing after a Muslim mob attacked their village on Friday following a rumoured derogatory Facebook post Dhaka Tribune

Family members of Titu Roy brushed aside any possibility of him operating a Facebook account, saying he is illiterate.

A controversial Facebook post is said to have triggered the communal attack on the Hindu houses in Ranglpur’s Thakurpara village.
There were rumours that one Titu Roy, originally from Thakurpara but currently living in Narayanganj, put up a Facebook post defaming Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) a few days ago.
However, an analysis of the said Facebook account from where the controversial post was published shows there is a good chance someone else might have impersonated Titu.
The Facebook account resembling Titu Roy is named ‘MD Titu’. The ‘MD Titu’ account was opened on Facebook just two months back in September this year, although he had managed to make 288 friends by this time.
It appears whoever opened the account has only a handful of Titu’s photos and posted them tirelessly, almost every day.
Several photos of people appearing to be relatives of friends of ‘MD Titu’ were also posted.
That ‘MD Titu’ is a Hindu youth has also been established through the abundance of photos of Hindu deities on his wall.
This ‘MD Titu’ appears to have a habit of sharing photos of young girls and porn content.
The controversial post first appeared on the timeline of ‘MD Titu’ on October 19. It was a screenshot showing a ‘blasphemous’ post from another Facebook ID on the wall of a Facebook group, named ‘Bangladeshi Teenagers.’
The controversial screen shot later started appearing in the photo galleries that were being published by ‘MD Titu’ almost everyday.
It appears even after receiving threats over the screen shot, ‘MD Titu’ was undaunted and continued posting the screenshot several times in a day.
Rangpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that they were yet to come to any conclusion about the Facebook ID that was used for spreading the controversial post.
“We are trying to recover the Facebook ID that gave rise to the incident. A team has been assigned to arrest Titu from Narayanganj. The real mystery will be solved if he is found there,” he told reporters after visiting the affected areas on Saturday.
The Rangpur SP, however, claimed that the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and its affiliated student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir might be behind the communal attack on Hindu houses at Thakurpara. “The criminals of Jamaat-Shibir have carried out the violence at Thakurpara to destabilise the country ahead of the oncoming national polls.”

Real Titu is ‘illiterate’

Meanwhile, family members of Titu Roy brushed aside any possibility of him operating a Facebook account, saying he is illiterate.
Titu’s younger brother Bipul Chandra told the Bangla Tribune: “Titu took loans from different NGOs and failed to repay the money. He fled from the area seven years ago over that issue. He never returned home after that. He took his wife and children to Dhaka around five years ago.”
Titu and his wife now work at a garment factory in Narayanganj’s Fatullah, he added.
“We had heard that a Facebook ID named after Titu spread rumours and caused all the tension here. But my brother cannot even read a word. How can he run a Facebook ID? We think someone else opened an ID and named it after Titu,” Bipul said.
The villagers confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the Facebook ID of ‘MD Titu’ was the one that was used in spreading hatred against the Hindu community.
They claimed the controversial screenshot was shown to them by some some people at a local market a couple of days ago.

Nasirnagar revisited

On October 30 last year, a mob of radical Islamists in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar upazila beat Rasraj Dash mercilessly and handed him over to police, alleging that he posted a morphed image of Kaba on the Facebook.
The attackers also vandalised and looted his house, and destroyed two Puja pavilions at Haripur village.
The controversial Facebook photo also sparked a series of communal attacks on the Hindu minority of the area. At least 17 temples and Puja pavilions, and over 58 houses were vandalised and looted by a mob of about 3,000 people following a rally, organised by radical Islamist groups Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and Hefazat-e-Islam.
There were announcements from local mosques the previous day – a trend seen many times in recent years before attacks on temples and houses of Hindus and the Buddhists across the country.
Later, more houses were vandalised and torched in the area.
Police investigation later found out that the morphed photo posted from Rasraj’s Facebook account was used by the masterminds of the attacks to spread communal hatred.
In 2012, a crowd of Muslim destroyed more than a dozen Buddhist monasteries in Ramu of Cox’s Bazar following a hate campaign using a photo allegedly defaming the Quran. The investigators later found that the masterminds of the attack spread a rumour that the photo was uploaded on Facebook by a young Buddhist man from the area.

53 detained over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh
The Bangladesh police have detained 53 people in connection with arson attacks on the homes of Hindus over a rumoured Facebook post by a local “insulting religion”.
More than 30 homes belonging to Hindu families in Rangpur’s Thakurbari village were ransacked and looted before being set on fire by a mob on Friday over the “derogatory” status posted by a Hindu man, Bdnews24.com reported.
One person, 30-year-old Habibur Rahman, was killed when the police opened fire to ward off the angry mob that turned violent and set fire to several homes. Eleven others were injured in the violence.
Police filed two cases of the incidents and arrested 53 people, said Police Superintendent Mizanur Rahman.
One of the victims, Dulali Rani told the Dhaka Tribune: “A mob came to our neighbourhood on Friday afternoon and started ransacking our home without any provocation. They even took our cattle.
“They burned everything, even my cooking pots. We do not have a place to sleep at night, and no way to cook food.”
Several villagers said that if someone posted a derogatory status on Facebook, hold that one person accountable for his or her action.
The status was allegedly put on social media by Thakurbari village native Titu Roy, but very few villagers admitted to seeing it, the daily reported.
One of the witnesses said thousands of protesters from six nearby villages banded together after the Jumma prayers and attacked the Hindu neighbourhood.
A three-member investigation committee was formed to probe the situation. The district administration said it is making special arrangements to compensate the victims of the attacks.

An elderly woman wails after zealots burned down her house in Horkoli Thakurpara village of Rangpur yesterday in a targeted attack over an alleged Facebook post “hurting religious sentiments”. At least 30 Hindu houses were destroyed in the mayhem. Photo: Collected

A man was killed and 20 others were hurt after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells as violence flared up in Horkoli Thakurpara village of Rangpur yesterday over an alleged Facebook post “demeaning Islam”.
At least 30 Hindu houses were burned and vandalised as religious zealots ran riot in the village in the afternoon and staged demonstrations blocking Dinajpur-Rangpur highway.
Law enforcers took action triggering a clash that left seven policemen, among others, injured.

The deceased was identified as Habibur Rahman. He died of bullet injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where 11 of those wounded were undergoing treatment.
Police arrested five people over the incident.
Titu Chandra Roy, son of late Khogen Roy of the village, “made the Facebook post” on November 5, said Jinnat Ali, officer-in-charge of Gangachara Police Station.
Alamgir Hossain, a trader from nearby Lalchandrapur village, under the district's Gangachara upazila, filed a case against Titu the same day, the OC added.
Titu, now in his 30s, has been living in Narayanganj with his wife for around four years, local sources say. This newspaper could not reach him for comments.
It also could not be verified whether anyone else was handling his Facebook account or if it was hacked.

The day the case was filed, a group of 20 to 25 locals met at Lalchandrapur and discussed the alleged Facebook post, sources said, adding that those people fixed November 10 for a demonstration.
Yesterday, thousands from several villages gathered in front of a mosque in Shayela Shah Bazar area after Juma prayers and then staged agitations on the highway, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for over an hour.
In Horkoli Thakurpara, the rioters, many of them carrying sticks, torched 20 houses of eight Hindu families, including that of Titu, and vandalised about 10 others.
“I could not understand why my home was burned down," said Titu's mother Jiten Bala.

The OC said as the mob went berserk, police fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse them and restore law and order.
Later in the day, Saifur Rahman, assistant superintended of police of Rangpur, said the situation was now under control.
The Rangpur district administration formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Abu Rafah, additional district magistrate. The committee has to submit its report within seven working days, said Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman.
In October last year, religious zealots carried out a synchronised attack on the Hindus in Brahmanbaria's Nasirnagar upazila, destroying around 100 homes and at least five temples and looting valuables.
The violence was triggered by a Facebook post purportedly from the account of one Rasraj Das for "hurting religious sentiments of Muslims".
Rasraj, a fisherman, was freed on bail several months ago as police found evidence that someone else, not him, posted the “anti-Islam” content through either hacking or faking his Facebook account”.
In September 2012, fanatics attacked the Buddhist community in Cox's Bazar's Ramu, claiming that a Buddhist youth “insulted Islam” on social media. An investigation by The Daily Star found the Facebook  page  was  photoshopped.

Titu Roy, who hails from Thakurpur village, has been accused of ‘insulting religion’ in a post on Facebook (Reuters File)
A Hindu man, whose alleged offensive Facebook post led to an arson attack on over 30 homes of the minority community in Bangladesh, has been arrested, the country’s home minister said on Tuesday.
Asaduzzaman Khan said this while visiting the Thakurpur village in Rangpur district, about 300 km from Dhaka.
The activists of the country’s largest Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia, went on the rampage on Friday, saying the post had hurt their religious sentiment.
At least one person died when police opened fire on the rioters. Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said that Jamaat tried to fuel unrest as general elections in Bangladesh were nearing.
“Titu Roy has been arrested, and legal action will be taken if he is found guilty,” Khan was quoted as saying by the bdnews24.com.
Roy, who hails from Thakurpur village, has been accused of ‘insulting religion’ in a post on Facebook.
The minister said that he has heard that Roy was illiterate and left home about eight-to-ten years ago.
The police has filed two cases at the Kotwali and Gangachara police stations and arrested 128 suspects, Rangpur’s additional superintendent of police Zakir Hossain said.
“Police are investigating the matter. Such incidents are occurring nowadays. It is a conspiracy,” Khan said.
Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said that police did not find any insulting remarks in Roy’s post on Facebook.
Roy’s mother Jiten Bala claimed that her son never went a school and he is a village poet.

A court on Wednesday granted four days remand for Titu Roy in case filed against posting blasphemous photo on social media that triggered an arson attack on Rangpur Hindu houses.

Debangshu Kumar Sarkar, Senior Judicial Magistrate of Rangpur, passed the order after police appeared the accused before the court and sought 10days remand for interrogation.

Titu was arrested from Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district on Monday night.

On November 5, Titu Roy, son of late Khogen Roy in Harkoli Thakurpara area, allegedly uploaded the Facebook post demeaning Islam that sparked a strong protest.

The protesters torched eight Hindu houses and locked in a clash with law enforcers that left one dead by bullet and 25, including seven cops, injured.

Later, police filed two cases over the incident with Kotwali and Gangachara police stations.

(Hindus are even more protected in Bangladesh than in India -- Bangla Law Minister)

Today BDMW 16.11.2017 Human Rights Team consisting Kamal Karmaker, Shymol Banerjee, Jowtirmoy Banerjee, Dhananjoy Mohanta, Rajib Saha, Goutam Roy, Dilip Kumar Ray and Rabindra Ghosh visited the spot - Thakurpara village of Gangachora Upazila of Rangpur District for fact finding of religiously motivated attack by Islamic Zealots on Hindus where a number of Hindu houses set on fire, Hindu deities desecrated, goods belonging to those Hindus looted including their cows on 10.11.17. Perpetrators also set fire on the cow who sustained severe injuries. The wretched Hindu victims cried and made an appeal to BDMW for their protection of lives, properties, right to religion and dignity within Bangladesh.

We noticed 24 houses of Hindu dwellers were either set on fife and huge number of belongings/goods inducing 16 cows were looted, although police recovered 14 cows from the possession of the perpetrators. During our investigation Upazila Nitbahi Officer, Gangachara Upazilla was present. The Hindu victims complained that the inadequate compensation paid to them by the Deputy commissioner is far from their need and the irreparable loss sustained by them was not mitigated.
During our fact finding it is revealed that two daughters of detenue Titu Roy were kidnapped for forceful conversion to Islam one after another by the local Muslims one after another. Ms.Shewli Rani (18) however recovered from the Muslim perpetrators but Ms.Suchitra Rani (13) was not rescued and she is still under the captivity of the Muslim perpetrators.
We also discussed with Md. Mizanur Rabman, S.P. of Rangpur District who also said the victim Titu Roy was arrested in connection with case No.09 dated 6th November,2017 under section 57(2) of Information technology Act,2013. S.P. also said when the victim was produced before the court no body on behalf of him moved application for bail today. But the Magistrate granted four days; remand prayed by O.C. of the local Police out of remand prayed for 10 days. The S.P. also gave us to understand that more than 130 perpetrators identified and arrested, but the main instigator was not yet arrested by police. He also assured us that due to safety of Titu Roy they sent him into custody and investigation is going on.
We also talked with Deputy Commissioner, Rangpur who also said a good number of tin sheds and some cash money were provided to those Hindu victims after unfortunate incident of attack on those victims took place on 10th of November,2017.

We also tried to contact with the victim (accused of Case No.09 dated 06.11.2017 filed by one Md.Zinnat Ali who is now under custody of the O.C. Gangachora Police station, but the O.C. said the victim has not yet reached at his police station till our stay at the Police station.
We collected the copy of three first information reports from the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Rangpur : one is filed by Md. Rafiqul Islam-1, S.I. of Police, Kotwali Police station, Rangpue being case No.29 dated 10.11.2017 under section 143/147/148/149/341/342/186/353/332/333/436/427/114/34 of Penal code against 83 Muslim perpetrators and more others.
We also collected copy of another first information report (FIR) lodged by S.I. of Police, Md. Rezaul Alam Sarkar, Gangachora Police station being case No.11/329 dated 10.11.2017 under section 143/147/148/149/341/188/332/333/353/448/436/379/295/427/302/34 of the penal code.against 75 perpetrators and more unidentified more.
Bangladesh Minority Watch is very much concerned about attack on Hindu minority setting fire on their houses, religious places at Gangachora P.S. and Kotwali P.S for alleged defamation of religion in the face book. We also demand the case started against Titu Roy should be withdrawn and be released forthwith.
Police totally failed to control the situation when thousands of activists of various Islamic organisations assembled after "Human Chain" was over. Finding no other alternative police saw situation gone beyond control then they fired on the mob and as a result one Md Habibur Rahman (Habib -28) succumbed to death and 25 injured.
Bangladesh Minority Watch is very much concerned about not arresting the instigators who resorted to agitate other peace- loving people to attack Hindu houses, setting fire with religious motivation. The right of religion should be protected and be safeguarded for peaceful co-existence. The Minorities should be protected..
Bangladesh Minority Watch is still investigating the matter and as soon as we will be able to procure more information on this matter will be produced before the local administration for immediate action.

This fact finding will continue till the victims of repression are safeguarded within their village at Rangpur District.

With best regards,

Rabindra Ghosh
